NICO at Home with Madeline Jovicic

What did your process look like when creating the gorgeous cherry print?
My first step in any kind of creative collaboration is always creating a mood board, this helps to get the creative juices flowing, this step also involves creating a few sketches to include within the mood boards.
Polka dots are having such a big moment and I wanted to do a playful and romantic twist with the bright red cherries. I knew immediately I wanted to do a colour combination of navy with the cherry red. It feels like such a classic yet underrated combination of colours. A little bit nostalgic, chic and timeless.
How does designing for fabric shape or shift your artistic process compared to your usual practice?

Designing for fabric is a little more pressure because rather than a collection of paintings to tell a story you need one strong visual to express the whole concept. Which involves taking a little more time exploring and building a few concepts and choosing one (always the hardest part!)

What does self-care look like for you?
An everything shower, or a long bath. Going to my favourite cafe for a matcha and sweet treat. Gentle movement for the body, like walking, yoga or stretching. A glass of wine with the girls after a long day.
How does sustainability play a role in your life?
Sustainability is constantly in the forefront of my mind and an ever-evolving practice of “What else can I be doing to lower my impact on the environment?” through my day to day.
Can you tell us a little bit about your journey as an artist, how has your work evolved over time?
I started painting around five years ago just as a hobby and a way to relax, almost a type of moving meditation.
Looking back at my artworks I can see so much evolution in subject, at the moment shifting from tablescapes and scenes from travels to portraits and figures but one thing that has remained is my love of using colour and of painting fruits.
You have recently travelled through Europe, how was that experience? Did you use your trip as a way to relax or as a way to gather inspiration?
My intentions are always to relax on holiday but that always immediately goes out the door once I arrive. Hungry to see as much as I can, gathering inspiration before moving onto the next destination. Try as I might to relax it just isn’t me! I’m the kind of person who needs a holiday after their holiday.

How does fashion reflect your personality, and what are the key pieces you can't live without?
I absolutely love expressing myself through the outfits I wear depending on my mood each day. At the moment I can’t live without my dark wash denim jeans,  a good pair of leather ballet flats that you can walk 20,000 steps in and an oversized pair of sunnies.
What are you working on right now?
Right now I’m working on a collection of artworks for an upcoming exhibition with Leda Gallery in Newcastle. Launching on the 25th of October!
