NICO at Home with Maddy Jane

How did you enjoy creating the NICO at Home content?
It felt good to capture content that felt real, easy, and a little sexy! That made it fun. No pressure, no production, just hanging out at home, doing the usual, that ends up looking pretty cool when it’s shot on film. I love when something captures the in-between moments and doesn’t feel styled or staged, just real life.

What does self-care look like for you?
Self-care for me isn’t about being perfectly balanced. It’s more like doing one small thing that makes me human again and not just running on chaotic energy. Taking myself out for coffee, sitting in the quiet, letting the sun hit my face, cleaning one corner of the house, working on a random craft project, or rearranging art and trinkets in the lounge room. It’s giving myself permission to slow down and not have to be “on” all the time.
How does sustainability play a role in your daily routines?
It’s mostly about awareness and intention. I buy second-hand a lot, and wear things until they fall apart. I’m getting really into repurposing and making things for myself, and I love to support local makers and people who actually care about what they create. I think sustainability’s also about energy, not burning out - learning how to live and create in a way that lasts.
Your sense of style is very cool. How does fashion play into your self-expression, and what are your wardrobe essentials?
Aw cheers! Fashion’s always been an extension of my mood and where I’m from. My Bruny Island roots always play a part. There’s a bit of rugged practicality mixed with something witchy or instinctive. I like when outfits feel lived-in but have one thing that throws it off in a good way. Essentials for me are a strong knee-high boot, a comfy jumper, good socks, and one piece that makes me feel powerful (like a quirky bag or a statement jacket)

Your music feels so raw and authentic. What usually sparks the start of a song for you?
Thank you! That is important to me. Usually, it’s a feeling that’s sitting in my chest and won’t leave until I write it out. Sometimes, it’s a line that hits me out of nowhere - sometimes it’s a conversation I can’t stop replaying. It never works when it’s forced. It just shows up when it’s ready, and I try to get out of my own way.
What has been a memorable or “pinch-me” moment in your career?
There have been some crazy ones. Supporting Harry Styles on tour, opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and doing Like A Version. But really, the biggest pinch-me moment is always being on stage and seeing/hearing people sing my lyrics back. That’s the most unreal and grounding thing, knowing the songs found their way into someone else’s life.
What was your process like when writing and recording your new EP Clear as Mud Pt. 1?
It was about listening to intuition. I stopped trying to chase a sound or a formula and just let things be messy, honest, and alive. I recorded a lot of it in spaces that felt familiar, with people I trust. The whole thing’s about accepting imperfection and that definitely showed up in the process too.
What are you working on right now?
A mix of chaos and clarity. I’m finishing up recording Clear As Mud Pt.2 (the rest of the album). I’m dreaming up visuals and trying to build what’s next without losing the heart of it.
